The Urabá-Darién was the starting point of SINFONÍA TRÓPICO. From the 17th - 30th of November, 2014, various artistic - environmental activities that involved the young people of the region were developed, with the purpose of learning and sharing about the local initiatives.
SINFONÍA TRÓPICO was inaugurated on the evening of the 20th November in Apartadó. We celebrated the official launch with a concert and premiere of a composition by Robert Lippok (lead), Miguel Navas, Carolina Riaño and Carlos Manco! The composition took the sound archive of the Botanical Garden of Medellín as starting point and inspiration, and mixed the sounds of birds and amphibians with traditional Colombian rhythms and electronic tunes from Bogotá and Berlin. The result created an innovative new style of music that proved equally convincing to feet, brains and hearts. Known only to those involved in the process was the fact that the musicians had met for the first time a mere 76 hours before, when they started putting together what they had composed and developed in their respective countries. The concert was illustrated by the amazing visual language of Zaji Chalem, who converted images illustrating the beauties and threats to Colombian biodiversity into powerful sequences. Exhausted but profoundly happy we went to bed after duly celebrating the first composition of SINFONÍA TRÓPICO. Charlotte Streck
Our trip through the Urabá - Darién was diverse and full of surprises, as well as its region. After some days of get together and talks of all the group in Simona del Mar, the artists and scientists of SINFONÍA TRÓPICO split up in two groups. One group, conformed mainly of visual artists and musicians, visited the North of Urabá (Necoclí, San Juan de Urabá, Arboletes), where they experienced cultural encounters with theatre and dance groups and local musicians. They left the SINFONÍA TRÓPICO members impressed with their skills and energy! The other group crossed the Golf of Urabá. The expedition to Acandí and Triganá brought the participants into the rainforest, having the opportunity to get to know the initiatives from the community to ensure the preservation of their environment.
The second group, which consisted of scientists and plastic artists, visited Chigorodó where they painted during 10 hours the first “Diversity-Mural” with a group of local youngsters called “Ten Virus” and Colectivo Atempo. Art was the connecting thread of people of different ages, gender, sexual orientation, place of origin and profession.
"The moment of the realization of a mural in the public space affects the experience of the whole community, because not only the one who paints is involved, but also everyone who passes by and reflects on what young people are doing. Their town. Many people lost their grief and came to ask what and why this was being done, and so the dialogue action continued to grow. Performing this type of artistic actions collectively, participating in a tribute to nature, the action of manifesting, of leaving a memory in the name of everyone in the name of life and nature, makes this type of experience endure in the mind and in the heart of the one who sees it and the one who lives it. Colectivo Atempo
In the Gulf of Urabá, the dense jungle of Darién was visited in Triganá and Acandí. A boat was the transport to get to Acandí, where we could see closely the work done by officials of National Parks. The Acandí, Playón and Playona Wildlife Sanctuary was also visited, which is located in this strategic area for the majestic Carey and Caná turtles. It was also possible to visit the natural reservoir of the civil society RIES “Reserva Integral y Ecoaldea Sasardí” in Acandí. There we met the environmental leader Hugo Ortega Sierra, who has a firm commitment to ecotourism as a local development strategy, coherent with the environment and socially sustainable.
